Continued

The school was officially opened on November 9, 1947 at 11:00 a.m. in the patronage building, to which various important people were invited.
The first director of the music school was Mr. J. Wolfs, who was also a piano teacher. Soon we were able to offer lessons for violin, ballet and wind instruments as well.
Over the years, the music school moved several times, including to Villa Alpha and to a building on Grote Straat, which has since been demolished.
After years of persistent urging, we finally received a modest subsidy from the municipality. Since the school clearly met a need, but could no longer be financed by private funds and subsidies, we were finally forced to turn the school over to the municipality.
Although I no longer live in Valkenburg and am therefore no longer on the board of the current Municipal Music School of Valkenburg aan de Geul, I still feel closely connected to it.
I wish them many more good years of music.

Together, there is music in it

When I was appointed director of the Valkenburg Music School in 1979, I could not have imagined that I would so quickly feel at home in this school and its community.
A large field of work was still to be plowed, which was a challenge for me.
Numerous discussions with the authorities in various communities were necessary and eventually led to the establishment of branches in Eys, Mechelen, Partij and Klimmen.
Despite all this, the work remained difficult, especially since there was still a lot to be done in terms of personnel or working conditions.
So it was a great surprise for the board and the undersigned that the municipality of Valkenburg aan de Geul decided in August 1982 to transform the Music School Foundation into a management committee according to article 61 of the Municipal Act.
With great pleasure I think back to the pleasant way in which discussions were held with the municipal councils of Valkenburg aan de Geul, Margraten, Voerendaal, Nuth, Wittem and Vaals about service contracts and the subsidy policy to be followed.
Also the cooperation with the board members is always very pleasant. With all the developments related to the expansion course, they have always been very stimulating.
I would like to mention one board member in particular, namely Mr. Sjo Schurgers. It was a great loss for me personally and also for our school when he passed away. Every week he visited me. Countless times we were together in the region.

When you think about all that, you realize that both the community and the school had to put a lot of energy into putting a structure in place …
