Marie-José Schunck, poems (log in)

Political Autobiography

Είσαι καλός καπετάνιος, Μαρία
You’re a good captain, Maria

Before Marie-José began to write poems she was committed with heart and soul to the cause of the resistance against the Greek military junta of 1967–74.
In the following text she gives thereof an of course incomplete report. The occasion to write this letter was an article in ‘Vrij Nederland’ on the medals from the Greek government after the fall of the junta for Dutch citizens, who were said to have made an outstanding contribution to the resistance against the colonels. Here it was, as everywhere after dictatorships: suddenly almost everyone had been in the resistance.
Then she gives an overview of the activities of her own group, which was not only to give out information. This information has been given by means of the ‘Griekenland Bulletin’ above all, which should be later renamed ‘International Korrespondentie’ because they found it important to expand their coverage.

Below occur some terms that require further explanation:

  • go back The PAM (ΠΑΜ, Patriotic Antidictatorial Front) was formed immediately after the military coup of April 21, 1967 between the forces of the EDA and the KKE to oppose the dictatorship of the colonels. Mikis Theodorakis was one of the founding members.
  • go back The PAK The Panhellenic Liberation Movement (Greek: Πανελλήνιο Απελευθερϑτικό Κίνημα, Π.Α.Κ.), also known by its acronym PAK, was an social-democratic resistance organisation against the 1967-1974 military regime in Greece. It was established in 1968 in Sweden by the exiled Andreas Papandreou.
  • go back EKKE-AO: In February 1970, the KPD-AO was founded in Berlin. In parallel, other small parties were established. The EKKE-AO was the Greek version.
