Veel Limburgse en andere verzetsstrijders zijn na hun arrestatie en eventuele veroordeling in een schijnproces afgevoerd naar een concentratiekamp, meestal in Duitsland, en daarvan zijn velen niet teruggekeerd. Die kampen waren vaak deel van een systeem van een hoofdkamp en subkampen.
Die subkampen hoorden meestal bij fabrieken, waaraan de gevangenen door de SS-Totenkopfverbände met veel winst als slaven werden verhuurd of bij de bouwplaatsen van verdedigingswerken, bijvoorbeeld vanuit Ladelund, een subkamp van Neuengamme, waar de gevangenen zaten, die de nooit in gebruik gestelde Friesenwall moesten bouwen, bijv. Charles Bongaerts.
Hierboven worden de kampen genoemd, waar de meeste Limburgse verzetsmensen zijn vermoord.
In de registratie van overleden gevangenen staan verschillende ziekten waaraan gevangenen zijn gestorven: enteritis, tuberculose, dysenterie, hartfalen, enz. Dat is verhullend. De ware doodsoorzaak zijn vrijwel altijd de abominabele omstandigheden in het kamp geweest. Bovendien zijn de gegevens volledig onbetrouwbaar. Vaak werd er in de registratie maar wat opgeschreven. [1]
