During the occupation, the priest Charles Brummans was a geography teacher at the Episcopal College in Weert, where he also lived.
Cammaert writes: Partly in collaboration with the pilot aid organization Luctor et Emergo/Fiat Libertas [1], he set up an escape route through Belgium and France to Spain. He also helped Jews and people in hiding. He had numerous contacts, but worked quite independently, [2]
He did not join any particular organization, such as the LO or Luctor et Emergo, but he always knew how to find someone when these organizations were in trouble. He also sent refugees to Switzerland via Père Tim in Nancy. [3]
He has an incredible number of contacts and helps wherever he can. Thanks to his independence and a good dose of luck, he miraculously escaped arrest twice. At the beginning of November 1943, he fled Weert head over heels and went into hiding in Leiden until the liberation. [4]
