Lex Smidt was a member of the rugby club ’t Gooi since November 1940. On its website [1] it is stated that he served as a sergeant in the motor service, which provided drivers and vehicles in the pre-war army.
Like many others, he made himself available for underground work after his demobilization as a sergeant in the former Dutch Army. Through a traitor in Naarden, he fell into the hands of the occupation forces in June 1941 [1], was accused of espionage and possession of ammunition, and was imprisoned for eight months in the prison called Oranjehotel. [2][3]
He was then taken to Maastricht, where he was sentenced to death by a German military court. Together with the other convicts, he was murdered in the Sachsenhausen concentration camp.
Alex Klaas ( Lex ) Smidt is listed in the Erelijst 1940-1945 (Honor Roll of the Dutch Parliament). [4]
