Het Grote Gebod – L.O.

Tom Schiphorst lived at Paddepoelscheweg 15 in Nijmegen, took care of people in hiding and distributed illegal magazines. He also hid an American pilot. Member of the LO-Maas & Waal. On August 1, 1944 he was arrested and on March 9, 1945 he died in the Mauthausen concentration camp. [1]
His family’s death notice in the Limburgsch Dagblad of February 16, 1946 also mentions these dates. [5]
The municipality of Nijmegen gives a different date for his arrest:
He was Student of the M.T.S. (technical school, now H.T.S.) in ’s-Hertognbosch.
Arrested in Nijmegen on October 1943, then transported to Germany via Arnhem and Kamp Vught [4]. Arrested for illegal work. Probably by the German SD. At an address in Nijmegen, where he was staying at the time, a search was carried out by this authority. He was arrested as a suspect, taken away and not released again. He spent several months in Vught, then brought to Germany. We heard from the Red Cross that he died in Mauthausen. His name is mentioned in the memorial chapel in Valkenburg.

There is no known grave for him. [2#2]
His mother was a widow since August 25, 1943 and in 1948 she moved to Heerlen, the town where Tom was born. [1#1]
He is listed in the “Erelijst 1940-1945” (Honor Roll of the Dutch Parliament). [4]
