Horst also did not escape the terror of the commando Berendsen of the AKD. They hunted down people in hiding under the leadership of Johan Berendsen [1], the "Terror of Venlo.” On July 29, 1944, Harry Driessen, a regional distributor of Vrij Nederland and Trouw, was arrested by J. Sabbé and J. van Zutphen. Driessen tried to escape, but was hit by a bullet in the back. He was transported to Vught via the hospital in Horst. During the prisoner transport from “camp Vught” [2] to Sachsenhausen concentration camp [3] on September 6, he tried to escape again, probably near Ravenstein. The guards opened fire, and Driessen was mortally wounded. ([4] p. 592)
In his file in the archives of the OGS (War Graves Foundation) it reads: During deportation to Germany, about September 8, 1944, shot on train and after a few days thrown off train by a fellow prisoner. Where, is not known. It was a transport from Vught to Germany, Oranienburg. [5]
He is listed in the “Erelijst 1940-1945” (Honor Roll of the Dutch Parliament). [6]
