Joseph Petrus Adrianus Schreur /Schreurs (Joseph)

 06-11-1911 Rotterdam      31-10-1944 Klingelpütz Köln (32)
- Roermond - Unorganized resistance - People in hiding - Forced Labor -

On the wall of the Limburg Resistance Monument there is a Joseph Schreurs listed for Roermond. No person with that name can be found among the Roermond war victims, but the furniture maker and person in hiding Joseph Petrus Adrianus Schreur can be found. We assume, therefore, that he is meant.
About Joseph Schreur we read in his file at the OGS (war graves foundation) on page 2 as follows:
He was in hiding from 19 October 1942 until 10 August 1944 in the house St. Camillus in Schöndeln, here. On the latter date he was arrested together with others and transported to Germany [1#2].
His brother G.Schreur, member of the Camillian Fathers, was at that time rector in that nursing home St.Camillus. [2]
According to the honor roll [7] he was a member of the resistance. However, since this is not evident from other sources, he is classified here with unorganized resistance. For the fact, that he tried, with the help of his brother, to evade forced labor can in itself also be considered resistance.
He was taken to Cologne for forced labor and was there in the infamous Klingelpütz prison. [3]
This was also overcrowded with forced laborers during the war. [4]
On his page at tracesofwar.nl we can read:
Schreur evaded the obligation to work in Germany, but was betrayed. On August 1, 1944, he was arrested. He died in the Klingelputz prison in Cologne, presumably by being shot.
While the civil registry (Standesamt) in Cologne gives the date of death as Oct. 16, 1944, the archive of the OGS (among others) gives Oct. 31, 1944.
    Schreur has no identifiable grave.
     [5]
Another version about the cause of his death is found in his file at the OGS: probably in bombing of the infirmary of the prison in Cologne. [1#3]
He is listed on the Roermond War Memorial [6] in the cemetery of Roermond.
He is listed in the “Erelijst 1940-1945” (Honor Roll of the Dutch Parliament). [7]
