The fallen resistance people in Limburg
Arnold Kanters received an education at the Nijverheidsschool (vocational school) Weert from 1934 to 1937 [1] as a mechanic [2#2]
After that he was a civil servant of the Rijkswaterstaat (Roads and Waterways Authority) as a bridge keeper [3].
He joined the HNB [2#4], the Dutch branch of the BNB [4] for which he performed espionage services. [7]
When the Allies liberated Weert and the surrounding area, Arnold Kanter enlisted in the Binnenlandse Strijdkrachten (Domestic Forces). These B.S. had been formed in September 1944 from the merger of the resistance organizations LO/LKP, OD and RVV, but members of other resistance groups could also join.
As a member of the B.S. he was killed on a patrol by a grenade [2#4] in Nederweert. In the Erelijst, Leunen (near Venray) is given as the place of death. [3]
De bevrijding van Nederweert in 1944 (The liberation of Nederweert in 1944) was filmed by Fons Mertens. The unique footage is kept in the archives of the Stichting Geschiedschrijving (Foundation Historiography) in Nederweert.
This person is listed in the “Erelijst 1940-1945” (Honor Roll of the Dutch Parliament). [3]
Reburied on the National Field of Honor in Loenen, grave E 1328 [6]
