Wilhelmus Mathijs van Leuken (Willem)

 30-12-1919 Weert      10-04-1945 Beesel (25)
- Weert - BS (Domestic Forces) - Dutch Soldiers -

www.oorlogsgraf.nl …

Wilhelmus Mathijs van Leuken was a cutter in a tricotage factory [1] and a member of the N.B.S. (Nederlandse Binnenlandse Strijdkrachten = Dutch Domestic Forces)
Later they were usually called B.S., because that was not so similar to N.S.B. (Nationaal Socialistische Beweging = National Socialist Movement).
Within this B.S. he had been assigned to the guard troops and died in active service. [2#4]
These Bewakingstroepen included people who had either been members of the OD during the occupation but had not actively resisted, or who had become soldiers only after the liberation.
However, this does not mean that the work in the guard troops was not dangerous. When asked about the circumstances of his death, the municipal secretariat of Weert answered: drove on a landmine.. [2#4]
He was buried in the Roman Catholic Cemetery "Sint Martinus" Weert (Molenpoort), grave F-2-1. [2#13][ogs]
On an older page in the OGS archives the grave number D-2-1 is given, but there is nothing about a reburial. So it is probably a clerical error. [2#4]
The book Onze Gevallenen says he was executed. But Beesel, where he died, was already liberated on March 1, 1945. [1]
