Johannes George Alexander van Medenbach de Rooy was an inspector at the life insurance company Nillmij and a first lieutenant in the general staff. At an early stage he had already a secret radio transmitter. [5] He belonged to the group around Hans Zomer [1], and became thereby a victim of the Englandspiel (England game). [2]
On May 5, 1941, he was arrested in Bilthoven. He was first transferred to the prison at the Gansstraat in Utrecht [5], then to the Oranjehotel [3] and then had to appear before the OD trial in Maastricht, where he was sentenced to death. Executed in the Sachsenhausen concentration camp in Oranienburg.
In some sources, his name is incorrectly spelled with an ij, given his father’s statement in his file at the Oorlogsgravenstichting (War Graves Foundation). [5]
In the Book of the Dead of the Oranjehotel the correct spelling is shown. There you can see where it comes from, and that it should be a y, as with so many Dutch names from archives. [8]
