M.H. Schmitz

 ?      ?
- Police - Knokploegen (K.P.) - Survivors - Roermond -

    Cammaert writes summarily about him:
Roermond, police officer. Led the K.P.-Roermond. His help for Jews was controversial because he was said to have enriched himself through Jewish property. As there were repeated victims in his environment, some suspected him of being in league with the occupying forces. However, this could never be proven convincingly. In the spring of 1944 he left for Oisterwijk. [1.1] M.H. Schmitz is in our database despite this uncertainty, precisely to show how difficult it sometimes is to separate the wheat from the chaff, especially when hard facts are lacking. You can read more details about Schmitz’s controversial role in Chapter 6. [1.2]
