Wilhelmus Hub. Hoeben

 16-02-1902 Nederweert      06-02-1945 Kdo. Meppen-Versen (Neuengamme (42)
- Aid to People in Hiding L.O. - Limburg + - Forced Labor -

Het Grote Gebod – L.O.

He was a member of the LO in Someren and was “arrested on June 16, 1944 in roundup of Allied airmen.” [1]
On the website Brabantse gesneuvelden [2] we read about him:
Wilhelmus was born on February 16, 1902 in Nederweert and lived in Someren, where he worked as a foreman. During the German occupation he was active in the resistance as a member of the local section of the L.O. and its armed group, the Knokploeg. On June 17, 1944, he was arrested for this reason in his place of residence by the security service and imprisoned in the Vught concentration camp and in the prison in ’s-Hertogenbosch. From ’s-Hertogenbosch, Wilhelmus was deported to Germany via the Amersfoort camp, arriving at the Neuengamme camp near Hamburg on October 14. From Neuengamme, he was transported as a forced laborer to the Meppen-Versen subcamp near the Dutch border. Here the prisoners worked under miserable conditions in brick factories, clay pits and peat pits. Due to mistreatment, malnutrition and the lack of medical care, more than 250 prisoners died of disease and exhaustion. As Allied troops approached (the camp is said to have been liberated by Poles), the survivors were evacuated to Neuengamme. Wilhelmus is one of the prisoners who perished in this concentration camp. He died on February 6, 1945, at the age of 42.
