WikimediaAmby was tot 1 juli 1970 een zelfstandige gemeente oostelijk van Maastricht.
Voor de oorlog weken vele Joden vooral uit Duitsland en Polen naar Nederland uit. Sommige gemeenten zoals Gennep, Venlo, Maastricht, Heer en Amby hanteerden zeer soepele toelatingscriteria voor joodse vluchtelingen. In het kleine Amby vestigden zich tot augustus 1933 maar liefst 117 uit Duitsland en Oost-Europa gevluchte joodse families.
In de nacht van 24 op 25 januari 1944 overvielen mensen van de LO/KP na overleg met de plaatselijke gemeenteambtenaar J.H.J. Limpens het gemeentehuis van Amby. Limpens was duikhoofd van de LO. Ze verbrandden het bevolkingsregister en namen zegels, stempels en enkele honderden blanco persoonsbewijzen mee.
Lèneke Schoenmaeckers heeft tot haar arrestatie in de Withuishof gewoond.
