On the corner of the street
The underground press and Radio Oranje worked well together, as we see here. Someone writes a text, another makes a drawing to go with it and Jetty Paerl (Jetje of Radio Oranje) sings the spot song “On the corner of the street”. If you can still sing, then sing along!
First of all, we want to point out a special feature of Limburg: In the eastern mining region, a resistance magazine was published from the summer of 1941 under the name “Het Vrije Volk”, not to be confused with the national resistance newspaper of the same name.
The following information is based on “Het Verborgen Front” by Fred Cammaert: [1]
The founders were Wim Quint, Charles Bongaerts and the architect Rientjens, who all lived in Heerlen. The magazine was extremely well-informed, they even knew many ins and outs of the SiPo in Maastricht. It contained tips on where and how to carry out acts of sabotage, opinion articles and domestic political news. And it published the names of “untrustworthy” people. Unfortunately, the magazine did not exist for long. Due to treason, a member of the group that produced and distributed “Het Vrije Volk” was arrested in Geleen. After several days of torture, the sadists of the SiPo had him ready. Between October 27 and November 5, 1941, twenty-four members of the Geleen distribution group were arrested. This heralded the end of the magazine.
Perhaps to relieve the prisoners somewhat and to emphasize the impossibility of silencing “Het Vrije Volk”, the group around Bongaerts and Quint produced a special edition of the magazine exclusively for the Sipo-Maastricht for a few months. Because of the risk involved, they no longer dared to distribute the magazine widely. The last issue of “Het Vrije Volk” appeared on April 30, 1943, on the occasion of Princess Juliana’s birthday and german General Christiansen’s appeal to Dutch soldiers to come back to captivity, which had been published shortly before.
And now to the underground press in general:
After the surrender of the Dutch army in May 1940, the occupation didn’t seem so bad at first. The National Socialists still hoped to win the Dutch over to their ideology. In contrast to Belgium and France, no military administration was set up, but a "civil" one. But that was only an appearance. The press was brought under German control as early as May 15, 1940, but the first free newspaper appeared on the same day. This created what is often referred to as the “illegal” press. After all, the resistance called itself “illegality”. By the end of the war, a large variety of sheets had been published in the millions. A more precise estimate is not possible. In addition, each copy was often passed from hand to hand. There weren’t any copiers yet. The most common means was the good old spirit duplicator [2], which the older ones among us still know from their school days. If such a printer was not available, the texts were copied by typing or even writing.
The distributors of this free press also often sold photos of the royal family and the like to fund all kinds of good causes. The need for uncensored information was great, especially since in May 1943 all radios had to be surrendered to make listening to Radio Oranje [3] more difficult and even more when the Allied troops where approaching to liberate Europe from fascism. Of course, not all radios were handed in, and confiscated radios were also retrieved by combat groups.
The Nazis were aware of the dangerousness of this printed matter. They persecuted the makers with great doggedness, but also tried to create confusion with a fake resistance newspaper: De Gil [4] (The Scream).
