Ed Miedema, the driving force behind the resistance in Gennep, had numerous connections and helped many Jews to find hiding places. Because the Sipo from Den Bosch had become aware of him, the clergyman went into hiding on July 11, 1944. On his initiative, a local commando was set up in consultation with the K.P. group of Nijmegen, which included J. van de Kamp, J.H. Geurts, J.H. Guelen and the brothers H.F. and J.J. Hendriks. The aim of the group was to silence traitors and gossipers and to take action against black marketeers. The actions against the latter yielded 25,000 guilders. The money went to the L.O., which used it for support funds, and to H. Janssen, the printer of the underground newspaper “Ons Volk”. When it turned out that an N.S.B. member had bought the local synagogue with the intention of demolishing the building, the K.P. members took out all the valuables and set fire to it. Thanks to the timely alarm, the damage to the building was limited.
Johan Guelen and the brothers H.F. and J.J. Hendriks were arrested in a firefight with the police and taken to the Vught camp the same day, where the bullet was waiting for them. [1]
