Johannes Hubertus Smeets (Jan)

 06-09-1889 Urmond      21-01-1945 Dachau (55)
- Urmond -

Jan Smeets was a horticulturist. On April 18, 1912 he moved to Venlo, on July 14, 1917 to Schoten (Haarlem), on November 11, 1935 to the municipality of Bloemendaal. [1#2] There he had his own business in Overveen. [1#5]
This area just behind the dunes is known for its bulb fields.

The Bloemendaal police wrote on April 14, 1955 [1#3] to the OGS
The late Johannes Hubertus Smeets, born in Urmond 6 September 1889, horticulturist, living Cearálaan 12 at Overveen in this municipality, was registered in the population register here on 11 November 1935, coming from Haarlem.
He died in Dachau on January 21, 1945. Smeets had been taken to Germany by the SS for doing illegal work.
In criminal and political matters nothing has become known to me to his detriment.
     [1#2]
On December 6, 1943, he was arrested in Bloemendaal-Overveen. [2]
In the Vught camp (Konzentrationslager Herzogenbusch [3]) he had the prisoner number 8854. From March 26, 1944, he was imprisoned in Dachau and perished there. [2]
The OGS wrote about this to his widow:
Originally it was assumed, on the basis of certain information, that the mortal remains of the prisoners who died in Dachau were no longer cremated from November 1944, but were buried in a mass grave on the Leitenberg near Dachau.
Now that the on-site investigation can be considered complete, I regret to have to inform you that it has been found out that burials took place only from February 27, 1945, and that all prisoners who died before that date were cremated.
     [1#12]
If he would have been buried and not cremated, he would probably be lying now in the cemetery of honor in Bloemendaal. [4]

What did his resistance work consist of?
