Piet Hens was mayor of both Valkenburg and Houthem since 1917 and from 1935 also of Oud-Valkenburg. On October 1, 1940, so in the first year of the German occupation, the municipality of Valkenburg-Houthem came into being with the merger of Houthem, Oud-Valkenburg, Schin op Geul and Valkenburg. Hens remained mayor for the time being and tried to make the best of it. Dismissed in 1943, as a result of the strikes of April-May. []
His successor was Paul Schmalbach, a member of the nazi party NSB. Mayor again 1945–1953. We do not (yet) have details of his dismissal during the occupation. Buried in Valkenburg, cemetery on the Cauberg.
The first photo is from the year 1938 [1], the second from 1955. [2]
