Hoensbroek is located not far from Heerlen in the eastern part of the mining district in the Netherlands. The state mine Emma, where mainly fat coal was mined for gas and coke production, was the second largest coal mine in the Netherlands. Today, Hoensbroek is part of the municipality of Heerlen.
The hard blows fell there, as in many places, even before the rise of the LO. The communists in particular were bitterly hunted, but the other early resistance groups, mostly founded by demobilized Dutch soldiers, had to suffer as well. In 1943, the LO took power, and many who had escaped the dance by then joined the L.O. or its armed wing, the knokploegen. From now on, the LO was to be the main organization. The local group of the L.O. of the rayon (sub-district) Hoensbroek belonged to the district of Heerlen. In addition to the main town, the rayon included the villages of Nuth, Schinnen, Spaubeek, Oirsbeek, and Treebeek. (Cammaert VIb p. 670 [1])

Liberated: 1944-09-18

L. Kohnen, an employee of the Vaals distribution office, delivered distribution documents to the Gulpen district of the LO, which included Vaals. He delivered between six and eight hundred voucher cards per period. The father of Sjeng Coenen, a friend of Joep Francotte from Vaals printed fake stamps in his printing shop. Kohnen stuck them on cards and canceled them in black ink according to the instructions. The number of vouchers to be issued was thus artificially increased. The scam was never revealed.
