Alfons Ceulen lived in Maastricht until November 24, 1937, then in Roermond. He was a student. An official of the regional employment office recalled after the war that he was deported to Germany during the front period from Roermond, i.e. in the period September 1944 - March 1945. [1#8]
During these very hard months for Roermond, a fanatical hunt was organized for those in hiding. For more details, see The Tears of Roermond, ’44/’45. [2]
He perished in a so-called labor education camp (AEL, Arbeitserziehungslager). There ended up such (mostly young) men who had tried to evade the obligatory labor service in Germany. In this case it was the AEL Hunswinkel, municipality Lüdenscheid [1#3]. A barrage was being built there. More about it, see link AEL above.
Originally he was buried in the Hühnersiepen-Treckinghausen communal cemetery in Hunswinkel [3], but has since been moved to the Dutch field of honor in Düsseldorf-Oberbilk [1#1], which is part of the German war cemetery Düsseldorf-Stoffeln. 1230 Dutch war victims are buried on this Dutch field of honor. [4]
Alphonsus Antonius Pieter Hubertus ( Alfons ) Ceulen is listed in the Erelijst 1940-1945 (Honor Roll of the Dutch Parliament). [5]
